Make Your Perfect Evening a Reality

History
This historic mission-style hacienda in Los Angeles County was the longtime home of Old Hollywood actor and peace activist Franz Lederer.

Born in Prague in 1899, Lederer had a successful stage career in Europe before trying his hand at motion pictures, landing the male lead opposite Louise Brooks in the classic 1929 silent film “Pandora’s Box,” according to published reports. He immigrated to the U.S. and Hollywood in the early 1930s, starring in films with such leading ladies as Joan Bennett, Ginger Rogers and Claudette Colbert.

In 1934, Lederer began building this home and ranch on a 6.7-acre knoll in the San Fernando Valley in the style of old California missions. The one-level house on Woodlake Avenue was built with rock quarried from the site.

The property is also known as Los Angeles Cultural-Historic Monument No. 204.
